The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and Europe.
