The speculation around the recent awards show has been intense, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team might be designing a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of complex computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and flexible progression—elements that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs that are viable with a distinct build with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully permissive, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be solved in diverse methods, often in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games of all time. Now, players can look forward to a new entry in this legendary franchise.
