A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” stated the head of state.
The official announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and management of these vital undertakings.
